Types of Fillings and Procedure Stages
Amalgam fillings (black/gray) are very durable but have largely been replaced by composite today because they are not aesthetic and contain mercury. Composite fillings, on the other hand, are aesthetic and very strong fillings that are selected to perfectly match the patient's own tooth color, harden instantly with a blue light, and bond chemically to the tooth.
If the decay is very superficial, it can be done painlessly even without anesthesia. If the decay is deep, local anesthesia (needle) must be administered to the tooth before the procedure. Once numbness is achieved, only pressure and the sound of water are felt while the decay is being cleaned; absolutely no pain is felt.
Since modern light-cured (composite) fillings made today are completely hardened with a special light during the procedure, you can start eating and drinking from the moment you leave the clinic. It is only recommended that you be careful not to bite your tongue or cheek until the numbness in your lip wears off.
