Epley Maneuver

About the Treatment Method

The Epley Maneuver is the single, definitive, and instantly resulting physical treatment for "BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo)" disease, which causes severe dizziness resulting from calcium crystals (otoliths) located in the balance center in the inner ear breaking loose and escaping into the semicircular canals. It does not require medication; it is the process of putting the crystals back in their correct place by an ENT or neurology doctor moving the patient's head at specific angles.

Vertigo and Crystal Repositioning

Application of non-medication dizziness treatment.
Will I feel dizzy during the maneuver?

Yes. When your doctor places your head in special positions that will move the crystals, you will experience that famous, severe spinning sensation again for a few seconds. However, this is proof that the crystals are advancing to the correct canal (that the procedure is working).

Can't the disease be treated with medication?

BPPV (crystal displacement) is a mechanical problem (there are stones wandering in the canal). Medications only suppress the feeling of dizziness and numb the patient; they do not put the stone back in its place. Therefore, mechanical maneuvers like Epley are the main and only definitive solution.

What should be considered after the maneuver?

For the crystals to hold on to their place again, it is recommended that the patient not suddenly tilt their head forward or backward, not look up, and keep their head elevated with a double pillow while lying down for the first 24-48 hours after the procedure. The success rate of the procedure is around 80-90% in a single session.
