Eye Laser Surgery (Lasik)

About the Treatment Method

Eye laser surgery (Refractive Laser Surgery) is a delicate operation in which excimer or femtosecond laser technologies are used to permanently correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism for patients who do not want to use glasses or contact lenses. The cornea (the outermost transparent layer of the eye) is millimetrically shaved and reshaped with laser beams, ensuring that light focuses completely and accurately on the retina.

Laser Types and Patient Suitability

Different laser operations such as LASIK, PRK, SMILE, and No Touch.
Can anyone who wants to have laser eye surgery do so?

No. The progression of eye prescriptions must have stopped (usually for the last 1 year, and over 18-20 years of age), the corneal thickness must be sufficient for laser shaving, and the patient must not have keratoconus, severe dry eye, glaucoma, or active rheumatic diseases.

Is there pain or needles during the surgery?

Eye laser surgeries are performed entirely with "Drop Anesthesia", meaning no needles are injected into the eye and the patient is not put to sleep. With just a few drops, the eye becomes completely numb. The surgery takes a total of 10-15 minutes for both eyes, and absolutely no pain is felt during the procedure.

What is the difference between the methods (LASIK, No Touch, SMILE)?

In the LASIK method, a thin membrane (flap) is lifted from the cornea and the laser is applied underneath; healing is very fast and painless (clear vision the next day). In the No Touch (TransPRK) method, the device does not touch the eye, the laser directly shaves the surface; it is applied to those with a thin cornea, but stinging/pain may be experienced for the first 2-3 days. SMILE is the newest technique that is performed by removing tissue from the inside without an incision, triggering dryness the least.

Will my eye prescription come back in the future?

After a successful and correctly planned laser operation, myopia or astigmatism is not expected to return to its previous state. However, due to aging, "Presbyopia" (inability to see close up) naturally begins in every person after the age of 40-45. This is a physiological process that will be experienced by both those who have had laser surgery and those who have not.
