In the laser depigmentation (Lumina Laser) procedure, the melanin pigments on the iris that form the brown eye color are fragmented by low-energy laser shots. The brown eye, whose pigments are destroyed, turns into the natural blue/green shade underneath. This procedure is only used to lighten the color; a specific color cannot be selected.
It is one of the modern approaches considered the most reliable. A thin circular tunnel (pocket) is opened inside the cornea with a femtosecond laser, and biocompatible medical dyes (special pigments) in the desired color are injected into this tunnel. The iris (the original muscle of the eye) is never touched; only the transparent corneal layer is dyed to mask the eye color.
Although the placement of silicone iris implants has been tried in past years, due to the risks of severe inflammation it can create inside the eye, permanent glaucoma (eye pressure), corneal failure, and blindness, it is absolutely not recommended to be done purely for aesthetic purposes by respected medical authorities and ophthalmology associations today and is banned in many countries.
