Direct Intervention in the Womb
Amniocentesis takes the baby's fluid, and genetic results can take 2-3 weeks. Since cordocentesis takes the baby's pure blood, chromosome (genetic) analysis results are definitely available in a very short time like 2-3 days. Also, if blood incompatibility (Rh), severe anemia, or infection in the baby is to be investigated, it is mandatory to look directly at the baby's blood, not the water.
No. The most miraculous aspect of cordocentesis is that it offers treatment possibilities (therapeutic). If the baby has anemia due to severe blood incompatibility and fluid accumulates in their abdomen, the baby's life can be saved by giving a "Blood Transfusion" to the baby while still in the mother's womb thanks to this needle.
Cordocentesis is technically much more difficult than amniocentesis because it requires entering a thin, moving umbilical cord vessel and requires experience. The risk of cord bleeding, slowing of the baby's heartbeat, or miscarriage is on average around 1-2% (slightly higher than amniocentesis).
