The Silent Danger: Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
Inside our inner ear (cochlea), there are thousands of microscopic hair cells that transmit sound to the brain. High sound waves above 85 decibels cause these hairs to shake excessively, bend, and eventually die over time. Dead auditory nerve cells cannot regenerate in the human body; therefore, the resulting hearing loss is permanent.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the "60/60" rule when using headphones. According to this rule; while listening to music, the volume of the device should never exceed 60% of the maximum volume, and headphones should not be used continuously for more than 60 minutes a day. Afterwards, the ears must absolutely be rested.
In-ear headphones, which are inserted fully into the ear canal, bring the sound source just a few millimeters away from the eardrum and trap the sound directly inside. This dramatically increases the decibel intensity. Over-ear headphones that wrap around the auricle from the outside are considered much safer for ear health as they disperse the sound and provide isolation.
