Cancer Preventive Surgery on the Cervix
Absolutely not. In the LEEP procedure, the uterus or cervix is not completely removed. Only that small millimetric, diseased area on the outermost surface of the cervix is shaved (removed) and cleaned. The woman's uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries remain completely intact and healthy.
The procedure can be performed in outpatient conditions with local anesthesia (numbing the cervix with a needle), and it is also successfully performed under a very mild sedation (sleep) of 10-15 minutes in the operating room to prevent the patient's excitement and possible minor pains.
Since the removed piece is very thin (usually 0.5-1 cm), it does not impair the load-bearing strength of the cervix and poses no obstacle to getting pregnant naturally. Very rarely, in recurrent and very deep LEEP procedures, since the cervix may shorten, the risk of "premature birth" during pregnancy may slightly increase; this condition is easily managed with a stitch (cerclage) during pregnancy.
