About the Treatment Method
Skin Treatment with Controlled Ultraviolet
Creams may work in very mild cases, but in severe psoriasis/vitiligo plaques that spread to the whole body (or large areas), creams are insufficient. In normal sunlight, there are also burning and carcinogenic UVB rays along with UVA. In PUVA cabins, harmful waves are filtered out, providing a controlled, pure, and therapeutic light combined with the power of the psoralen drug.
It is done in special stand-up light cabins in the clinic. The treatment can last for months, 2 or 3 days a week (a total of 20-30 sessions). Patients enter the cabin 2 hours after taking the medication; while the stay in the cabin is initially only at the level of seconds, it is gradually increased to minutes depending on the patient's skin reaction.
The psoralen drug makes the whole body sensitive to light and can accumulate in the lens of the eye. To prevent cataract formation, it is mandatory for patients to wear special 100% protective sunglasses with UVA filters throughout the treatment day (not only in the cabin but also when they go out until the sun goes down).
