How Should Care Be Managed During the Post-Cesarean Recovery Process?

About the Article

Besides being a life-saving method of delivery for a baby to come into the world, a Cesarean section is a major abdominal surgery in which the skin, fat tissue, and uterus (7 layers of tissue) are cut and stitched in the mother's abdomen. Therefore, the mother's post-operative recovery and wound healing process require much more care, time, and physical support compared to a normal delivery.

Recovery After Surgical Delivery

Surgical site care, pain management, and mobility restrictions for the mother.
What are the rules for surgical site (incision) care and taking a shower?

Keeping the cesarean incision clean and dry is the fundamental requirement for preventing infection. Unless your doctor tells you otherwise (and if waterproof tape was not used), standing and taking brief warm showers is generally permitted 2-3 days after surgery. Scrubbing the wound area is forbidden; after a shower, the area must be completely dried by gently patting it with a clean towel (without rubbing).

How is "Gas Pain," the biggest complaint after a cesarean section, prevented?

Because the abdomen is opened, bowel movements slow down, and severe gas pains that radiate up to the mother's shoulder occur. The only and most powerful way to prevent this is "Early and Frequent Walking." Starting to walk in the hallway 6-8 hours after surgery and consuming plenty of water/warm liquids instantly activates the bowels. A fibrous diet should be followed to avoid constipation.

What should be considered regarding heavy lifting and the use of a corset?

To prevent the uterine stitches from bursting, the mother must not lift anything heavier than her own baby (strollers, laundry baskets, etc.) and should not bend and straighten up suddenly for the first 4-6 weeks. Light-support medical corsets recommended by the doctor can be used when standing up to support the abdomen and reduce pain while moving.
