Uniportal Esophageal Cancer Surgery

Esophageal cancer surgeries are one of the most major surgeries performed on the human body; in the past, both the chest and the abdomen were opened widely (with a knife). Even in the multi-hole (VATS) method, there are 3-4 incisions, whereas in the "Uniportal" method, only a single 3 cm incision is opened. The surgeon perfectly performs all organ freeing and lymph node cleaning procedures through this single hole.

The chest wall (ribs) is very rich in nerve networks, and every incision means a new nerve trauma. The procedure performed through a single hole tremendously reduces postoperative patient pain. The patient starts breathing exercises much faster, the risk of pneumonia decreases, and the time to discharge from intensive care is shortened.

After the esophagus is completely cut and removed along with the cancerous part (whether open or single-hole method), the patient's own stomach (or sometimes large intestine) is pulled upwards towards the neck or chest level (made into a tube) and sewn to the pharynx as a new esophagus.
