Accessory Breast Surgery

Accessory tissue has exactly the same cell structure as the breast tissue in your normal breast. Therefore, whatever cancer risk your own breast carries, the same risk applies to the accessory breast in your armpit. However, the main reason for surgery is not the risk of cancer, but rather the inability to close the arm, friction, sweating, pain, and aesthetic discomfort.

If the excess in that area consists entirely of fat, liposuction may be sufficient. However, a true accessory breast contains dense "glandular tissue" (secretory glands), and these glands cannot be broken up and extracted with liposuction. The surgeon removing these glands from their roots (openly) with a small incision is the definitive and non-recurring solution.

The incision is usually made with aesthetic stitches hidden within the natural fold line of the armpit. Over time, the visibility of the scar fades and is generally unnoticeable when viewed from the front or when the arm is closed.
