Antidepressant Treatment

About the Treatment Method

Antidepressant treatment is a medical approach used in the treatment of psychiatric disorders such as major depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and panic attacks. These drugs regulate and normalize the person's mood by balancing the levels of neurotransmitters (chemical messengers) such as serotonin, noradrenaline, and dopamine, which provide communication between nerve cells in the brain.

Drug Usage and Effect Process

Stages of starting, taking effect, and stopping psychiatric drugs.
Do the drugs start taking effect immediately?

No, antidepressants do not take effect the moment they are taken like painkillers. It takes time for the drugs to reorganize the brain's chemistry. It generally takes 2 to 4 weeks to feel the first positive effects, and 6 to 8 weeks to see the full effect. It is critical to be patient and not stop the medication during this process.

Are antidepressants addictive?

One of the most common misconceptions among the public is that antidepressants are addictive like narcotics. These drugs do not structurally cause physiological dependence; they do not create "crises" or "cravings" like illegal substances.

What happens if the drug is stopped suddenly?

Stopping the drug suddenly without a doctor's advice can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, electric shock sensations, nausea, and severe restlessness, called "Withdrawal Syndrome". When the drug treatment is to be terminated, it should be stopped gradually (tapered) by spreading the doses over weeks under the supervision of a physician.
