Arthroscopy

About the Treatment Method

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive (closed) surgical method that has revolutionized the field of orthopedics and traumatology. It generally allows both the examination of the inside of the knee, shoulder, and ankle joints, and the repair of torn/damaged tissues in the same session, using a high-resolution camera (arthroscope) and millimetric surgical hand tools inserted through 2 or 3 small half-centimeter holes opened in the skin.

Advantages of Closed Joint Surgery

Usage areas and recovery speed of arthroscopic surgery.
In the treatment of which diseases is it most frequently used?

It is the gold standard for suturing or cleaning meniscus tears in the knee joint, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repairs, muscle/tendon impingements in the shoulder (rotator cuff tears), and the removal of free cartilage fragments (joint mice) inside the joint.

What is its advantage over open surgery?

In open surgeries, large muscle and connective tissues are cut to reach the joint. In arthroscopy, however, access is gained through small holes without damaging the tissues. Thanks to this, postoperative pain is at a minimum level, the hospital stay is very short (usually same-day discharge), and the patient can return to their normal life within days instead of weeks.
