Achilles Tendon Surgery

About the Treatment Method

Achilles Tendon Surgery is the process of surgically repairing complete tears (ruptures), chronic inflammations, or congenital shortness occurring in the Achilles tendon—the strongest tendon in the body that connects the heel bone to the calf muscles—by suturing or lengthening it. Especially in ruptures developing due to sudden sprints in athletes, it is essential for the patient to regain their former walking and running functions.

Surgical Repair and Rehabilitation

Tendon rupture surgery and the subsequent physical therapy process.
Doesn't it heal without surgery (with a cast)?

In complete ruptures, since the ends of the tendon move away from each other, it is very difficult for them to fuse together with only a cast; even if they do fuse, the risk of power loss and re-rupture is high. Therefore, a solid suturing procedure (surgery) is the gold standard, especially in young people, active individuals, and athletes.

Is open surgery or closed surgery applied?

It depends on the condition of the tear. In traditional open surgery, the tendon is directly seen and strongly sutured. In recent years, in suitable patients, "Percutaneous (Closed)" methods, where sutures are passed and tied through tiny holes over the skin, are also successfully applied, minimizing the scar.

When is it possible to walk after surgery?

After the surgery, the leg is placed in a cast or a special angle-adjustable walking boot to provide a specific angle. Depending on the healing speed of the tendon, stepping begins after 3-4 weeks by placing partial weight on it. A complete return to sports usually takes 6-9 months with a strict physical therapy program.
