Balloon Sinuplasty

About the Treatment Method

Balloon Sinuplasty is the most current and tissue-preserving (minimally invasive) method used in the treatment of "Chronic Sinusitis" disease, which progresses with years of unending headaches, nasal congestion, and post-nasal drip. It works with a logic similar to the angio balloons used to open heart vessels; a catheter with a deflated balloon at its tip is inserted into the blocked sinus canals, and the balloon is inflated to expand the natural drainage pathway of the sinuses without breaking bones and cutting tissues.

Stages of Opening Sinuses with a Balloon

Advantages of balloon sinuplasty over traditional sinusitis surgeries.
What is its difference from standard sinusitis surgery?

In traditional FESS (Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery) surgeries, to open the blocked canal, bone and mucosal tissues in that area are cut (shaved) with instruments and removed. In balloon sinuplasty, no tissue is cut or removed; only the diameter of the canal is permanently expanded by the high pressure created by the balloon.

Are tampons used after the surgery?

Since tissue is not cut and there is no bleeding, the biggest advantage of this method is that there is no need to put those dreaded cloth "Tampons" in the patient's nose after the surgery. The patient can comfortably return home on the day of the surgery.

Can it be applied to every sinusitis patient?

A balloon alone may not be sufficient in patients with severe flesh growth (polyps) inside the nose, very advanced bone curvature (septum deviation), or intense fungal infection. The most suitable candidates are patients without anatomical obstacles but whose sinus canals are chronically narrowed.
