Embolization Treatment in Nosebleeds

About the Treatment Method

Embolization is a life-saving Interventional Radiology procedure used in severe and recurrent nosebleeds (epistaxis) that cannot be stopped with standard methods (tampons, cauterization, blood pressure control) and reach life-threatening proportions. Without making a surgical incision, the bleeding millimetric vessel in the nose is found by entering through the artery in the groin and the bleeding is instantly stopped by occluding it from the inside.

Procedure Process and Definitive Solution

Angiographic intervention in unstoppable nosebleeds.
What is the difference from surgery?

In open surgery, it may be necessary to make deep incisions in the facial area or inside the mouth to find the bleeding vessel. Embolization, on the other hand, is performed entirely closed (intravascularly) with an angio logic. During the procedure, the patient only feels a needle insertion in their groin.

How is the bleeding vessel occluded?

A catheter is advanced to the vessels leading to the nose. By administering a dye drug (contrast medium), the "leaking (bleeding)" point is seen exactly on the X-ray screen. Then, special microparticles or coils are released from inside the catheter, occluding that part of the vessel.

Is the nutrition of the nose disrupted when the vessel is occluded?

The facial and nasal region has a very rich vascular network (collateral circulation). Since only the fine bleeding branch is occluded, there is no disruption in the nutrition or functions of the nose and other parts of the face.
