Jaw Surgery (Orthognathic Surgery)

About the Treatment Method

Orthognathic surgery is a maxillofacial jaw surgery performed to bring the skeletal structure to its normal and ideal anatomical position in cases where the lower and upper jaws are too far forward, too far back, or asymmetrical (crooked) relative to each other. In addition to correcting basic functions such as chewing, biting, and speaking, it extraordinarily improves the patient's facial profile, lip closure, and overall aesthetics.

Orthodontic Process and Surgical Stage

Details of jaw surgery carried out jointly with braces treatment.
Is braces treatment mandatory before surgery?

In the vast majority of cases, yes. When the jaws are moved to the correct position, the teeth must close (interlock) perfectly with each other. Therefore, a process of "Orthodontics (braces)" usually lasting 1-1.5 years takes place before the surgery. The surgery is performed while the braces are on.

How are bones moved and fixed?

The surgery is performed entirely intraorally (inside the mouth) under general anesthesia (there are no external incision scars on the face). The jawbones are cut in a controlled manner, shifted to the correct position, and fixed in their new place with MRI-compatible titanium mini-plates and screws that can remain in the body for a lifetime.

Are the jaws wired shut after the surgery?

In the past, jaws were tightly wired together for weeks for the bones to fuse. Since advanced titanium screws are used today, complete closure (wiring shut) is rarely necessary; only guiding flexible elastics are used. However, during the healing period (first 4-6 weeks), it is absolutely necessary to strictly follow a liquid and very soft puree diet.
