Debridement

Although the fastest and most definitive method is "Surgical Debridement" performed with a scalpel, it is not the only method. Depending on the patient's condition, "Mechanical" debridement which cleans the wound by washing, "Enzymatic" debridement which dissolves dead tissue with special creams, or "Biological (Maggot)" debridement methods using larvae can also be preferred.

Since the tissues being cut and discarded are already dead (lacking nerves and blood vessels), cutting them does not cause pain. However, slight pain may be felt when approaching the boundary of living tissue. Local anesthetic creams or anesthesia are used when necessary.

As long as the infection continues or blood flow is insufficient in chronic wounds, tissue death may recur. Therefore, the debridement process may need to be repeated several times over weeks until the wound is completely covered with live, red tissue.
