Crown Materials and Durability
Older generation metal-supported porcelain crowns have a gray/black metal framework inside, which can create a purplish or dull appearance on the gums. Zirconium, on the other hand, is a new generation white material that does not contain metal, has a light transmittance very close to a natural tooth, and provides both high durability and excellent aesthetics.
E-max crowns are produced entirely from glass ceramics, and their light transmittance (transparency) is even higher than zirconium. For this reason, it is especially preferred for the anterior group (incisor) teeth where perfect aesthetics are desired. For the posterior chewing teeth, since high resistance is required, Zirconium is generally used.
For the crown to fit the tooth perfectly and not look bulky, it is mandatory to perform millimetric (usually 1-2 mm) abrasion around the tooth. Temporary crowns are fitted to prevent sensitivity during the procedure.
