When a wound opens in a healthy person, blood (oxygen and healing cells) rushes to that area through the vessels. However, since the vessels are blocked in a diabetic patient, healing blood cannot reach the wound. Because the nerves are dead, the patient does not feel pain and continues to crush the wound by stepping on it.
