Knee Replacement

About the Treatment Method

Total Knee Replacement (Arthroplasty) surgery is the definitive surgical treatment applied in cases where the cartilages in the knee joint are completely melted away due to advancing age, rheumatism, or severe traumas, causing the bones to rub against each other and resulting in unbearable pain and bowing in the leg (bow legs or knock knees). Damaged cartilage and bone surfaces are cut and removed; they are replaced with an artificial joint (prosthesis) consisting of titanium, chromium-cobalt alloys, and special polyethylene.

Surgery Decision and Walking Process

Knee replacement, the definitive solution to calcification, and postoperative physical therapy.
When is the decision for surgery made?

If the patient's knee pain does not respond to injections, medication, or physical therapy; if there is pain that wakes them from sleep at night, if climbing stairs or even walking 500 meters has become torture, and if an X-ray shows "bone rubbing against bone," the decision for surgery is made.

When can I walk after the surgery?

In modern orthopedic techniques, patients are usually mobilized immediately on the day after the surgery with the support of a walker and are walked by bearing weight. The hospital stay is 3-4 days. With regular physical therapy exercises at home, transitioning to walking without a walker and without pain takes place within 4 to 6 weeks.

Does a knee replacement have a lifespan?

Prosthetic components are subject to mechanical wear. However, thanks to the state-of-the-art highly cross-linked plastics and robust metals used today, the average lifespan of the prosthesis reaches 15 to 20 years, also depending on the patient's weight and activity level.
