ECT Application and Side Effects
Unlike the old, scary scenes in movies, today the ECT procedure is performed entirely under anesthesia (sedation) and muscle relaxants, in operating room conditions. The patient does not feel anything during the procedure, there are no severe contractions in their body, only an electrical fluctuation is created in the brain.
It is normal to experience temporary forgetfulness or mental confusion regarding the period during the treatment and for a few weeks immediately after the treatment. However, this is not a permanent memory erasure; the patient's long-term past memory or intelligence is not damaged, and the memory recovers rapidly after the treatment ends.
It is generally planned as a course of 6 to 12 sessions in total, depending on the clinical response of the patient, usually 2 or 3 days a week. Each session takes only 15-20 minutes, including sleeping and waking up.
