About the Treatment Method
Therapy Process and Areas of Effect
No, EMDR is not a hypnosis or memory erasure procedure. You still remember the bad event you experienced, but the feeling of suffocation, panic, anger, or fear you feel when you remember that memory completely disappears. The memory is moved out of the brain's "danger" archive and transferred to the "normal memory" archive.
It yields very fast and permanent results primarily in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), abuse, accident, and natural disaster traumas; as well as phobias (airplanes, enclosed spaces), panic attacks, grieving processes, performance anxiety, and some eating disorders.
In traditional therapies, the patient tries to solve the problem by talking about it for months. EMDR, on the other hand, creates radical changes in a much shorter time (sometimes in a few sessions) because it activates the brain's information processing mechanism directly physiologically (with bilateral stimulation).
