About the Treatment Method
Vertigo and Crystal Repositioning
Yes. When your doctor places your head in special positions that will move the crystals, you will experience that famous, severe spinning sensation again for a few seconds. However, this is proof that the crystals are advancing to the correct canal (that the procedure is working).
BPPV (crystal displacement) is a mechanical problem (there are stones wandering in the canal). Medications only suppress the feeling of dizziness and numb the patient; they do not put the stone back in its place. Therefore, mechanical maneuvers like Epley are the main and only definitive solution.
For the crystals to hold on to their place again, it is recommended that the patient not suddenly tilt their head forward or backward, not look up, and keep their head elevated with a double pillow while lying down for the first 24-48 hours after the procedure. The success rate of the procedure is around 80-90% in a single session.
