Ilizarov Method

About the Treatment Method

The Ilizarov method is a revolutionary orthopedic "external fixator" system applied in fracture treatment, bone infections, congenital shortness, or dwarfism (limb lengthening). It consists of metal rings that wrap around the leg or arm from the outside in a circular shape and thin wires that connect these rings to the bone. The screws on the device are turned by the patient themselves every day, ensuring that the bone is separated in a controlled manner by 1 millimeter a day and that the body knits new fresh bone in between (lengthening).

Bone Lengthening and Fusing Device

The use of the Ilizarov frame and infection management.
Is it a very difficult and painful treatment?

Living with an iron cage may initially seem psychologically and physically challenging for patients. However, after the wires are fixed to the bone, they do not move, so they do not cause excessive pain. On the contrary, the device provides such strong stability that a patient with a comminuted bone fracture can walk by putting weight on their leg a few days after the device is attached.

How long does the device stay on the leg?

Depending on the amount of lengthening desired in the bone or the severity of the fracture, this period can range from 3 months to 1 year. As a rule, for every 1 centimeter lengthened, the device must remain on the bone for about 1 to 1.5 months (for the bone to harden).

Do the wire bases get infected?

Since there are wires extending from the outside of the skin to the bone, there is always a risk of the pin bases (pin site) getting infected. Therefore, it is the most critical condition of the treatment for the patient to dress the bases of these wires with povidone-iodine/alcohol every day and strictly follow the showering/cleaning rules recommended by the doctor.
