IMRT (Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy)

About the Treatment Method

Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is the most advanced radiation technology using computer-controlled linear accelerators when treating cancer tumors that are multi-dimensional and have an irregular shape (indented and protruding). IMRT divides the radiation beams into hundreds of small pieces and wraps the tumor in three dimensions by adjusting (modulating) the power (intensity) of each piece differently according to the thickness of the tumor in that area.

Smart Beam Distribution and Protection

The success of IMRT technology in irregular tumors.
What is the purpose of adjusting the beam intensity (Modulation)?

For example, in head and neck cancers, the tumor can grow in a curved shape, almost clinging to the spinal cord, salivary glands, and the eye. While the IMRT device delivers radiation, it gives a high dose of radiation to the thick part of the tumor, and the moment the beam hits the eye or salivary gland just behind it, it reduces the intensity of the dose to zero, saving the organ from blindness or dryness.

Does the procedure take a long time?

With advancing technology and VMAT (rapidly rotating devices) additions, IMRT sessions have become quite short. The patient completes their daily session usually within 10-15 minutes, including getting on and off the table.

Is it the same thing as IGRT?

They are different, but they are always used together. IGRT is the eyes that "see" the target (imaging); IMRT, on the other hand, is the weapon that adjusts the intensity of the bullet going to that target. In modern oncology, patients are treated with devices where both technologies (IMRT + IGRT) are combined.
