Motion-Preserving Spinal Surgery
In classical surgery, the curvature is corrected, but the vertebrae are fused and frozen together; the patient's flexibility and growth in that area stop. In the tethered (VBT) method, however, the bones are not frozen; because the tether is flexible, the patient can bend their back, play sports, and most importantly, continue to grow taller after the surgery.
No. For this method to work, the patient must have ongoing "growth potential". Therefore, it is generally applied to adolescent (idiopathic) scoliosis cases between the ages of 10-15, whose height growth is not yet complete and whose curvature is between 35 and 60 degrees. It cannot be applied to adults.
The surgery is performed with closed/mini-open methods (Thoracoscopic) entering from the side of the rib cage and takes an average of 3-4 hours. Bleeding is much less compared to fusion surgeries, and patients can usually return to school within 1 month and start professional sports after 3 months.
