Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

About the Treatment Method

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a psychotherapy method that is among the third-wave cognitive behavioral therapies, aiming for the person to stop fighting painful feelings and thoughts that they cannot change and "accept" them, and in return, to create a "committed" action plan by taking meaningful steps in line with their own life values. It is based on the philosophy that trying to escape from pain increases the pain.

Gaining Psychological Flexibility

The basic philosophy of ACT therapy and its application areas.
What is the difference from classical therapies (solving the problem)?

Classical therapies usually focus on the question, "How can we destroy or change this bad thought?". ACT, on the other hand, applies the philosophy, "Thoughts come and go; don't waste your energy fighting them. Accept them as they are, just don't get stuck on them, and focus on the things that are truly important to you in life." The focus is not on solving problems, but on gaining "psychological flexibility".

In which disorders is ACT used?

It is extremely effective in helping the person hold on to life again, especially in chronic pain management, obsessions (OCD), stubborn anxiety, depression, the grieving process, substance addiction, and adaptation processes to chronic diseases (cancer, etc.).
