Hormone (Endocrine) Therapy in Cancer

About the Treatment Method

Hormone (Endocrine) therapy is a systemic treatment applied to prevent cancer types that use the natural hormones in the body (Estrogen, Progesterone, or Testosterone) as fuel to grow and spread, from accessing these hormones. Especially in the treatment of hormone-sensitive Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer, it is used for years in the form of tablets (pills) or injections (needles) to shrink the tumor, prevent post-operative recurrence, or stop the disease in an advanced stage.

Hormonal Drugs and Their Side Effects

The process of starving the cancer by depriving it of hormones.
Is it the same thing as chemotherapy?

No, it is completely different. Chemotherapy is a chemical treatment that poisons all cells and causes hair loss and nausea. Hormone therapy, on the other hand, only stops the production of the hormone that feeds the tumor or blocks the receptors of the tumor that detect that hormone. It does not cause hair loss, but it creates complaints similar to "early/artificial menopause or andropause" in the body.

What side effects are seen during treatment?

In women (breast cancer treatment), severe hot flashes, vaginal dryness, weight gain, and bone loss (osteoporosis) are the most common side effects. In men (prostate cancer treatment), loss of sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, muscle loss, and a feeling of fatigue are experienced.

How long does the treatment continue?

Especially in breast cancer patients whose hormone receptors are positive, hormone therapy pills started for protective (adjuvant) purposes are usually used every day for a continuous 5 years, and sometimes 10 years, depending on the risk status of the disease.
