Prominent Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

About the Treatment Method

Otoplasty (Prominent Ear Aesthetics) is the surgical procedure in which the ear is laid back and restored to an aesthetic appearance and fold in cases where the ear stands out and forward prominently (prominent ear) due to the angle the pinna makes with the skull being wider than normal (usually 30 degrees) or its folds being insufficiently defined.

Surgery Age and Cartilage Shaping

Details of the otoplasty process in children and adults.
At what age is it more appropriate to do it in children?

The human ear completes about 85-90% of its development around the ages of 5-6. To prevent school-age children from becoming a subject of mockery among their friends and experiencing psychological trauma (loss of self-confidence), performing the operation just before the child starts primary school (usually at the age of 6) is the most globally recommended time. It can also be performed at any age in adulthood.

Will there be a scar, are stitches removed?

The incision is hidden by the surgeon in that secret back fold exactly where the ear meets the skull. For this reason, there is absolutely no visible surgery scar when viewed from the front or back. Generally, since stitches that the body dissolves on its own (absorbable) are used, there is no stress of having stitches removed after the procedure.

Is there a risk of the ears returning to their previous state (opening up)?

Cartilage is a resilient tissue with a memory and tends to return to its former shape. However, in modern otoplasty techniques, the surgeon does not just tie the cartilage with a thread; they rasp the back surface, weakening it and giving it flexibility. With successful surgery and the regular use of a "headband" after the procedure, the probability of it opening up again is quite low.
