Stopping Keratoconus Disease
The primary goal of the procedure is not to perfect vision (to give eagle eyes), but to "stop the progression" of the disease and save the patient from a future corneal transplant surgery. However, with the hardening and shaping of the cornea, a slight increase in vision quality (a decrease in prescriptions) is also experienced in many patients.
The procedure is performed under operating room conditions but only with "drop anesthesia" while the patient is awake. Because the eye is numb, no pain is felt during the procedure. The topmost membrane of the cornea is gently peeled off, Vitamin B2 drops are applied for 30 minutes, and then UV rays are administered for 10-30 minutes.
Since the upper membrane of the eye is peeled off, it is extremely normal to have severe stinging, watering, sensitivity to light, and pain for the first 2-3 days after the procedure. A protective clear lens is placed on the eye. After 3-4 days, when the epithelial layer heals, all pain disappears.
