No. After the tumor or bleeding is removed, your own original bone piece (flap) that was cut at the beginning of the surgery is placed exactly back in its place and fixed with titanium screws. When your hair grows back, there will be no external deformity or scar showing that you had surgery.
If the tumor in the brain is very close to speech or movement centers (motor cortex), the patient needs to be woken up during a part of the surgery. While the patient is awake, the surgeon talks to them or asks them to squeeze their hand. This ensures with 100% certainty that healthy brain tissue is not damaged millimetrically while the tumor is being removed. Since there are no pain nerves inside the brain, the patient does not feel any pain.
Every patient who has had a craniotomy spends the first night in the Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit, conscious, as standard procedure. Here, the patient's reflexes, speech, and neurological condition are tested every hour. If everything is fine, they are transferred to a normal room the next day.
