Ear Tube Surgery (Myringotomy)

About the Treatment Method

Ear tube surgery is the process of draining the mucous (effusion) fluid that forms behind the eardrum and does not go away for months due to adenoid enlargement, frequent allergies, or middle ear infections in children. This fluid, which does not dry up with medication, impairs the child's hearing and prevents language and intelligence development. During the surgery, a microscopic scratch is made on the eardrum to draw out the fluid, and a millimeter-sized ventilation tube is inserted into the hole in the eardrum to prevent it from accumulating again.

How do I know if my child has fluid?

If your child constantly turns the TV volume up too high, does not hear when you call from behind, frequently uses words like "Pardon? What did you say?", or has a delay in speech development compared to their peers, the probability of fluid accumulation in the middle ear is very high.

How is the surgery performed, is it difficult?

It is performed on children under a very mild (put to sleep with a mask) short-term general anesthesia. There is no incision from the outside or behind the ear; the eardrum is scratched by working directly through the ear canal with a microscope, the fluid is vacuumed out, and the tube is inserted. The entire procedure takes only 10-15 minutes for both ears.

Is getting tubes inserted a permanent solution, do they fall out on their own?

The standard tubes generally used in the shape of a spool (T-Tube) are spontaneously expelled (fall out) by the eardrum within an average of 6 to 12 months along with the normal growth process of the ear, and the eardrum heals and closes its own hole part. Tubes that very rarely do not fall out are pulled and removed by the doctor in seconds.

Is it forbidden to take a bath or swim while the tube is in place?

Since there is a tiny hole in the middle of the tube in the eardrum, there is a risk of water getting into the middle ear and creating an infection. For this reason, it is absolutely essential that the ear is plugged with special earplugs recommended by the doctor or cotton coated with Vaseline while taking a bath, swimming in the sea or pool during the months the tube is in place.
