Situations Where Open Surgery is Mandatory
This open incision method is absolutely applied especially in very large and adhered ovarian cysts, giant uterine myomas, when emergency intervention is required in firearm/stabbing injuries, or in oncological cancer (cytoreductive) surgeries where the surgeon wants to see the organs widely and feel them with their hand.
Since the abdominal muscles and membrane are widely cut, the postoperative process is more painful compared to laparoscopy. It takes a few days for the patient to start walking and for bowel movements to return to normal. The hospital stay is around an average of 4-7 days, and full recovery can take 1.5 - 2 months.
