Enema

About the Treatment Method

An enema is the process of introducing a liquid medicine inwards through the breech (anus) in order to soften petrified feces in cases of severe and persistent constipation or to completely clean the last section of the large intestine (rectum) before colonoscopy/bowel surgeries. This liquid stimulates the bowel walls, creating a strong contraction and ensuring the contents are emptied within minutes.

Application and Effects of the Procedure

How an enema is performed and how quickly it takes effect.
Will I feel pain during the procedure?

The enema procedure is not painful, but while the fluid is being administered through the anus, it creates a slight coolness, pressure, and a sudden need to go to the toilet (a feeling of urgency). The procedure takes only a few seconds.

How long after does one go to the toilet?

Although it varies depending on the feature of the solution (medicine) given, the patient is usually asked to hold the fluid inside for between 5 and 15 minutes after the enema is administered for the effect to be complete. Then, a severe excretory reflex begins, and relief is achieved within seconds.
