Laser-Assisted Snoring and Apnea Surgery

About the Treatment Method

Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) is a minimally invasive Ear, Nose, and Throat operation in which tissues that close the airway and cause severe snoring and mild sleep apnea (breathing cessation) as a result of excessive sagging or loosening in the pharynx area and uvula are cut, shaped, and tightened using laser energy.

Scalpel-Free Snoring Treatment

The process of tightening the uvula and soft palate with a laser.
What is the difference from classical surgery?

In traditional snoring surgeries, the sagging uvula and palate are cut and sutured with a scalpel, which leads to very severe swallowing pain after the surgery. In the laser method, the tissue is shaped by vaporizing (without bleeding). Since no stitches are made, the healing process is much faster and more comfortable.

Is it suitable for patients with severe sleep apnea?

Generally no. Laser-assisted surgery is more effective in the treatment of "Simple Snoring," which is a severe and social problem, or in mild sleep apneas. In moderate and severe sleep apneas (if the blockage is at the base of the tongue or in the larynx), this method alone is not sufficient; a CPAP machine or major skeletal surgeries are recommended for the patient.

Does snoring go away immediately after the procedure?

Since edema (swelling) will occur in the throat immediately after the procedure, your snoring may temporarily increase for the first 1-2 weeks. The main effect of the laser occurs as the tissues shrink and tighten while healing. True and permanent silence is usually achieved after a 3-4 week healing process.
