About the Treatment Method
Repair of the Fourfold Defect in a Single Session
It depends on the severity of the baby's vascular stenosis and the frequency of cyanosis (bluing) attacks. Ideally, "Complete Repair" surgery is preferred between the 4th and 6th months after the baby has completed some of their development. However, if the baby has very severe bruising, temporary "Shunt (Bypass)" surgeries can be performed in the first months to increase blood flow, and the actual repair can be postponed to around 1 year of age.
The surgery is performed with open heart surgery by connecting to a heart-lung machine. The large hole (VSD) between the right and left ventricles is completely closed with a special patch (synthetic or from the pericardium), thus preventing the mixing of dirty and clean blood. Then, the path is completely opened by shaving the muscles of the narrowed pulmonary artery or by placing an enlarging patch.
Tetralogy of Fallot complete repair surgery is one of the most gratifying surgeries in medicine. After a successful operation, the baby's bruising instantly disappears, and the heart begins to pump normal pink oxygenated blood. The child can run and play with their peers and live a completely normal and healthy adult life.
