Breast-Conserving Surgery (BCS)

About the Treatment Method

Breast-Conserving Surgery (Lumpectomy or Partial Mastectomy) is a modern oncological surgical method applied in early-stage breast cancer patients, where only the tumor is removed along with a small amount of healthy tissue around it (safety margin), without the need to remove the entire breast (Mastectomy). Thanks to this surgery, the woman's breast remains largely intact cosmetically and psychologically.

Organ Preservation in Breast Cancer

Conditions required for not removing the breast and the success of the treatment.
Isn't completely removing the breast (Mastectomy) safer for cancer?

This is a very old and false belief. Large-scale medical studies conducted for decades have proven that; in appropriate early-stage tumors, the survival time and disease-free survival rates of patients who undergo "Breast-Conserving Surgery + Radiotherapy" are 100% the same as patients who have their entire breasts removed.

Can it be applied to every breast cancer patient?

No. In cases where the tumor is very large compared to the breast size, if there are multiple tumors in different quadrants of the breast (multicentric), or if the patient has a genetic mutation (BRCA), the doctor may recommend the removal of the entire breast instead of BCS for safety purposes.

Is Radiation Therapy (Radiotherapy) mandatory after this surgery?

Yes, this is an international standard. Since the breast's own tissue is left behind, radiotherapy must absolutely be applied to that breast after the surgery in order to completely burn possible invisible microscopic cancer cells in that area and reduce the probability of cancer recurrence (relapse) to zero.
