Gastric Balloon

About the Treatment Method

The gastric balloon is the most popular and practical method in obesity treatment that enables weight loss without surgery (incision, stitching, or stomach reduction). A silicone balloon placed deflated into the stomach with the help of endoscopy (or in the form of a swallowable capsule) is inflated inside with a special blue liquid. By creating a constant feeling of fullness in the stomach, it ensures that the person gets full with very small portions and sticks to their diet.

Non-Surgical Weight Loss Method

Insertion, removal, and weight loss effect of the gastric balloon.
How is a gastric balloon inserted, is the patient put to sleep?

Traditional gastric balloons are placed in the endoscopy unit in 15 minutes, with the patient "under mild sedation (put to sleep)". The new generation "Swallowable (Elipse) Gastric Balloon", on the other hand, is inserted in just 10 minutes by inflating the capsule the patient swallows with a glass of water under an X-ray, without the need for endoscopy and anesthesia.

Can the balloon burst in the stomach?

Modern silicone balloons are extremely resistant to stomach acid and do not burst out of nowhere. Against the possibility of a leak, a harmless dye called "methylene blue" is placed inside. If the balloon leaks, even if very rarely, your urine turns green/blue, and you immediately consult your doctor to ensure the balloon is removed early.

How much weight does it make you lose?

Depending on the patient's starting weight, the time the balloon stays in the stomach (6 months or 1 year), and how strictly the applied diet is followed, patients can generally lose 15% to 20% of their total body weight (an average of 15-25 kilos).

How is the balloon removed when the time is up?

Endoscopic balloons are popped with the help of an endoscope with a mild sleeping procedure when the 6 or 12-month period expires and are removed from the mouth in seconds. Swallowable smart balloons, on the other hand, dissolve on their own and pop at the end of the 4th month and are naturally excreted from the body through feces; they do not require a removal procedure.
