Nephrostomy

About the Treatment Method

Nephrostomy is an emergency Interventional Radiology and Urology procedure applied in cases where the kidney swells (hydronephrosis) due to kidney stones, urinary tract strictures, or tumor compressions that prevent the urine produced in the kidney from going down to the bladder. Under ultrasound guidance, the kidney is entered directly with a very thin needle and catheter from the patient's back, and the accumulated urine is emptied (drained) into a bag outside.

Emergency Drainage Saving the Kidney

Causes of kidney swelling and application of the nephrostomy catheter.
What happens if a nephrostomy is not placed?

When the urinary tract is blocked, the produced urine accumulates inside the kidney, causing pressure. If this pressure continues for days, kidney cells (nephrons) quickly begin to die, and the kidney can completely lose its function (rot) and be lost. Moreover, if the accumulated urine becomes infected, it mixes with the blood, leading to fatal poisoning (urosepsis). The catheter is a safety valve that saves the kidney.

Is the procedure difficult, is the catheter permanent?

The procedure is performed with local anesthesia (numbing only the back) and takes about 15-20 minutes. The inserted catheter (tube) is usually temporary; when the underlying main cause of the blockage (e.g., stone breaking with laser or tumor surgery) is treated, the nephrostomy tube is also painlessly pulled out and removed.
