OLIF Surgery (Oblique Lumbar Hernia/Narrow Canal Surgery)

About the Treatment Method

OLIF (Oblique Lateral Interbody Fusion) is the most modern "Minimally Invasive" spinal fusion surgery, considered a revolution in spine surgery, developed for the treatment of lumbar hernias, narrow canal (Spinal Stenosis), slipped disc (Spondylolisthesis), and age-related spinal curvatures. The surgeon clears the damaged disc and replaces it with a cage that elevates the spine without touching the nerves at all, entering through a small incision on the side of the patient's abdomen (flank), not from the patient's back and muscles.

New Generation Spinal Surgery Preserving Muscles

The massive advantages of OLIF compared to traditional lower back surgeries.
What is the difference from classic surgery performed from the back?

In classical methods, to reach the spine, back muscles are torn and stripped from the bone, and nerves must be pulled aside (risk of injury). In the OLIF method, however, entry is made through the patient's lateral abdominal cavity; large muscles are not cut, they are only passed between muscle fibers, and since the spinal cord is accessed from the front, the risk of nerve injury or paralysis is theoretically close to zero.

How long does the surgery take and how fast is the recovery?

It takes an average of 1.5 - 2 hours. Because the back muscles and bones are not cut, those feared postoperative complaints of "inability to get up, back pain" are very few. Patients can easily stand up and walk on the same day or the next morning, blood loss is minimal, and the healing process takes only days, not weeks.

Is Platinum (Screw) placed?

After the disc is emptied with OLIF and a large support cage (titanium/PEEK cage) is placed in between, if there is a very severe spinal slippage or instability in the spine, it may be necessary to place screws (platinum) from the back through small holes in the same session or in a different position to fix the system 100%.
