POEM (Achalasia Treatment)

In the classical method, closed (laparoscopic) surgery holes were opened from the patient's abdomen, and the muscles were cut from the outside by going up from the stomach. In the POEM method, however, there is no incision or scar on the body; the procedure is performed just like a standard stomach endoscopy, entering only through the mouth and digging a tunnel under the mucous membrane (mucosa).

There are 3 different types of Achalasia disease. Especially in Achalasia types where the esophagus contracts from start to finish (Type 3 - Spastic), classical laparoscopic surgery cannot reach that high up, whereas POEM can cut the muscle to the desired length since it starts from the mouth. Therefore, it is the method with the highest success rate (approximately 90-95%) in all types of achalasia.

The procedure usually takes 1-2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. The patient is kept under observation in the hospital for 1 or 2 nights. After the control film taken the next day, the patient starts to be fed with liquid foods. The patient, who has been choking even while swallowing water for years, immediately notices that liquids flow away like oil.
