Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SBRT / SRS)

About the Treatment Method

Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SBRT) and Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS/Gamma Knife/CyberKnife) are high-level radiation treatments that work with a completely different strategy than classical radiotherapy in inaccessible brain tumors or small cancer foci in critical areas of the body (lung, liver). Instead of sessions lasting for weeks, a very high dose of radiation is given to the tumor in only 1 to 5 sessions with a precision of a tenth of a millimeter (pinpoint accuracy), and the tumor is destroyed as if it were "cut with a surgical scalpel".

Pinpoint Radiation Surgery

Details of non-surgical tumor treatment with radiation.
It is called surgery (Radiosurgery), is there bleeding or an incision?

The reason it contains "surgery" in its name is because the effect it leaves destroys the tumor in a single go, just like a surgery. Otherwise, absolutely no incision, bleeding, scalpel, or anesthesia is used during the procedure. The patient lies on the table, the device just converges invisible rays in 3D at the center of the tumor.

For which patients is it suitable?

It is the gold standard for metastases (spreads) in the brain, early-stage lung cancers that are not suitable for surgery (elderly or COPD patients), and patients with a small number (oligometastatic) of cancer foci in areas such as the liver and spine.

Does it harm healthy organs?

The biggest feature of SBRT is that it has "sharp boundaries". While the beam lands like a poison (very high dose) to the center of the tumor, the radiation dose reaching the healthy brain or heart tissue just 1-2 millimeters outside the tumor is close to zero. Thanks to this, side effects are incredibly lower compared to classic radiotherapy.
