Water Birth

About the Treatment Method

Water birth is an alternative and natural birth method in which the expectant mother uses a sterile birthing pool (or tub) specially designed to meet labor pains (contractions) and to perform the birth itself, filled with warm water close to body temperature (37°C). The buoyancy and warmth of the water relax the mother's muscles, give flexibility to the pelvic floor, and make the baby's transition from the water-filled environment in the mother's womb to the outside world much calmer and trauma-free.

Birth Process in a Water Environment

The relaxation provided to the mother by water and the safety of the baby.
Is there a risk of drowning in water when the baby is born?

This is the most curious topic. The baby already lives in a fluid environment (amniotic fluid) inside the mother's womb for 9 months without breathing, receiving oxygen through the umbilical cord. Because this fluid environment continues the moment it comes out into the water when it is born, the "breathing reflex" is not triggered yet. The second the midwife or doctor takes the baby out of the water and exposes it to air, the baby takes its first breath and cries. There is no risk of drowning.

What is the benefit of water to the mother, does it stop the pain?

Warm water increases the secretion of "endorphins" (natural painkillers) in the mother's body and reduces stress. The buoyancy of water gives the mother a feeling of weightlessness; the mother can easily change into the position she wants (squatting, kneeling) in the pool. At the same time, because the perineal area stretches very well under the influence of water, the need for an episiotomy (birth incision) is greatly reduced.

Can every mother give birth in water?

Unfortunately, no. In order to give birth in water, the pregnancy must be completely uncomplicated and low risk. In cases such as multiple pregnancies (twins), breech presentation of the baby, a large baby, high blood pressure in the mother, premature birth, or rhythm disorder in the baby, water birth is not considered medically appropriate, and a normal bed birth or cesarean section is preferred.
