Thrombolytic Therapy (Clot-Busting Drug)

About the Treatment Method

Thrombolytic therapy is an emergency medical treatment in which very strong enzymes (clot-busting drugs such as tPA) are given intravenously (via serum) to dissolve fresh blood clots formed within a vessel that cause a heart attack, stroke (paralysis), or pulmonary embolism. It is not a physical extraction process like a thrombectomy; it is a systemic approach that allows the clot to be chemically dissolved (melted).

Chemical Clot Melting and Its Risks

Bleeding risks and application conditions of thrombolytic therapy.
What is the difference from Mechanical Thrombectomy?

In thrombectomy, the clot is physically pulled and removed with wire meshes (via angio). In thrombolytic therapy, however, a very powerful dissolving drug (serum) is given into the blood to dissolve the clot. The drug has the potential to dissolve not only the clot in the brain but all clots in the body.

Why is it not applied to every patient (Are there dangers)?

Its biggest risk is "bleeding". Because it dissolves clots everywhere in the body, it absolutely cannot be applied to patients with brain hemorrhage, stomach bleeding, or those who have recently had major surgery. Furthermore, in the event of a stroke, it can only be given to suitable patients who apply within the first 4.5 hours.
