Amniocentesis

General Information About the Test

Amniocentesis is the procedure of taking a sample from the amniotic fluid that surrounds and protects the baby in the mother's womb during pregnancy, using a fine needle. This fluid contains cells belonging to the baby and is examined in a laboratory setting for the definitive diagnosis of genetic (chromosomal) diseases (e.g., Down Syndrome), neural tube defects, or infections.

Test Process and Preparation

Amniocentesis operative process and considerations for pregnant women.
In which week of pregnancy is amniocentesis performed?

It is typically performed between the 15th and 20th weeks of pregnancy, in cases of high risk in screening tests, advanced maternal age, or a history of genetic diseases.

How is the procedure performed, is it painful?

The entire procedure is performed under ultrasound guidance, monitoring the baby's position. A very fine needle is inserted through the abdominal skin. A slight cramp or a stinging sensation may be experienced, but it is generally tolerable.

Is rest required after the procedure?

Yes. Physicians recommend avoiding heavy physical activities and resting in bed for 24-48 hours following the procedure.
