ANA Test

General Information About the Test

The ANA (Antinuclear Antibody) test is a blood test performed to detect whether the immune system is mistakenly producing antibodies that attack the body's own cell nuclei. It is the most important screening test used as a first step in diagnosing many autoimmune diseases, ranging from lupus (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) to rheumatoid arthritis.

Test Process and Preparation

ANA test application and points to consider.
What does a positive ANA test indicate?

A positive test indicates the presence of antinuclear antibodies in the blood. This condition may be a sign of an autoimmune disease, but it does not provide a definitive diagnosis on its own. It needs to be supported by additional tests.

Can healthy individuals also test positive for ANA?

Yes. A portion of healthy individuals, especially the elderly, pregnant women, or following certain viral infections, may have a mildly positive ANA test.

Is any special preparation required for the test?

No, fasting or special preparation is not required for the ANA test. It can be applied by drawing blood from the arm at any time of the day. However, since certain medications may affect the result, the doctor should be informed.
