Angiography

General Information About the Test

Angiography (Coronary Angiography) is the most definitive and detailed diagnostic method used to visualize the internal structure of the coronary arteries that supply the heart muscle. The heart is reached with the help of a thin catheter inserted through an artery in the groin or wrist, and a special contrast agent (dye) is administered to the vessels to detect blockages or narrowing under X-ray (radiography).

Test Process and Preparation

Angiography procedure process and patient preparation stages.
Is angiography a surgery?

No, angiography is not a surgery, but a diagnostic imaging procedure. However, if necessary, treatment (angioplasty) can also be performed during the procedure by applying a balloon or stent to the narrowings detected.

How should the pre-procedure preparation be?

A 6-8 hour fast is generally required before the procedure. Medication adjustments for patients using blood thinners, diabetes, or blood pressure drugs are made by the doctor before the procedure.

Is the patient put to sleep during the procedure?

General anesthesia is usually not applied. Local anesthesia is applied to the intervention area (wrist or groin). The patient is awake throughout the procedure and can communicate with the doctor. The procedure takes an average of 15-20 minutes.

What is the difference between wrist angiography and groin angiography?

In wrist (radial) angiography, the patient's recovery time to stand up is much shorter, and the bleeding risk is lower. However, the traditional groin (femoral) method is preferred for patients with thin vascular structures or when more complex interventions are required.

Is a stent also placed during angiography?

Yes. In an angiography that is started purely for imaging (diagnostic) purposes, if a critical blockage is detected in the heart vessels, the vessel can be opened by applying a balloon and stent procedure in the same session (with the consent of the patient and their relatives).
