Anorectal manometry is a sensitive test that measures the functions, contraction strengths, and nerve reflexes of the rectum, which is the last part of the large intestine, and the muscles around the anus (sphincters). It is used by gastroenterology specialists to find the underlying cause of lower digestive system problems such as chronic constipation, inability to hold stool (fecal incontinence), or incompatibility of pelvic floor muscles.

How is anorectal manometry applied?
A thin, flexible catheter with a small, deflated balloon at the end is inserted through the anus into the rectum. The balloon is slightly inflated, and the muscles' response and pressure changes are recorded on a computer screen.
Is the procedure painful?
The procedure is painless and discomfort is generally minimal. It does not require anesthesia or sedation. The procedure takes an average of 15-30 minutes.
Is bowel cleansing required before the test?
Yes. To obtain accurate results, the rectum must be empty a few hours before the procedure. Therefore, you are asked to clean your bowels with a simple enema application recommended by your doctor.
