Anti-HCV Test

General Information About the Test

The Anti-HCV test is a screening test that detects antibodies produced by the immune system against the Hepatitis C virus, which can cause severe damage to the liver. The presence of these antibodies in the blood indicates that the individual has been exposed to the Hepatitis C virus at some point in their life. It is used for routine screening purposes in individuals with elevated liver enzymes or in high-risk groups.

Test Process and Preparation

The Anti-HCV test process and evaluation of results.

No, Anti-HCV positivity alone does not prove an active infection. The individual may have encountered the virus previously and recovered. An HCV RNA (PCR) test is mandatory to confirm the presence of an active infection.

Individuals with a history of blood transfusion, those who have had suspicious contact, patients with inexplicably elevated liver enzymes (ALT, AST), and healthcare professionals should undergo periodic testing.

Fasting is not mandatory for the Anti-HCV test. The blood sample is drawn from a vein in the arm, and the results are usually available on the same day.
